While in Twin Falls for the day, we decided to head up to the Craters of the Moon National Monument. It is a "great rift" in the Earth's crust where lava oozes through a crack. In some spots when it spurts up, it causes cinder cones to form. We climbed to the top of Inferno Cone.

Most of the area is not like the cinder cones. They are large cooled lava flows.

Underneath these lave flows are tunnels where lava used to flow quickly out of the rift. There are parts that have collapsed that now give access to underground caves. We went in 4 different wild caves that required lots of bouldering.

Going in...

Some parts had "skylights".

Most parts were pitch black. The kids lit the way - Gavin with his flashlight and Marina with her headlamp.

Coming back above ground...

Back in Twin Falls, we decided to try to check out the Shoshone Falls before a bite to eat at a Mexican Restaurant. Unfortunately, most of the water has been diverted for irrigation. The flow was extremely low and the once huge waterfall is nearly dry. Kind of sad.
