Our campsite here on Diamond Lake in Oregon:
Today, we went to Crater Lake National Park. The kids were wearing their matching hiking shirts from Grandma!
Crater Lake is one of the only lakes in the world where there is no water flowing in and no water flowing out. It is only fed by snowmelt on the inside of the crater. Because of this, it has the world record for clearest water, with visibility to a depth of 143 feet.
It is also the deepest lake in the United States.
There is only one trail in the park that leads down inside the crater to lake level. Unfortunately, the trail has been closed since August 15th for repairs. Bummer, but we drove around the Rim Road that circles the entire lake. We got to do a few short hikes to different overlooks.
Phantom Ship Rock
We stopped at the visitor center for the kids to get their Junior Ranger patch.
Crater Lake formed after Mt. Mazama erupted. When the magma chamber beneath the volcano was emptied, the mountain collapsed in on itself. The lake is now just under 2,000 feet deep at the deepest point. Because of the depth and the clarity of the water, it is this amazing shade of blue.
Wizard Island is the formation of a new volcanic peak within the lake.
We headed back to the campground to grill some burgers and corn and enjoy some s'mores for dessert.
